Stackable Crochet Baskets - Crochet Nests

Updated: Jul 29

This stackable crochet nest/stackable basket pattern was written to help out the Animal Welfare League of Arlington.

In July, AWLA called out to crocheters because they needed soft nests to comfort baby wildlife - rabbits, birds, and more. These cuties recover in the AWLA Wildlife Resource Center and when they are transferred to a licensed rehabber, their nests go with them. So AWLA is always in need of more nests.

This pattern makes three different sizes nests, which can also function as stackable crochet baskets! So whether you're making a bed for a baby bunny or a basket for your sunglasses, enjoy! Rove on!

If you want a video tutorial on how to make these crochet nests check out my Youtube Channel

Level of Difficulty: Beginner

What you'll need:

  • Worsted Weight Yarn (for my example I used Sugar'n Cream Teal in 100% Cotton)

    • Small Nest - 65 grams (approximately 4"x4", unfolded)

    • Medium Nest - 120 grams (approximately 7"x4", unfolded)

    • Large Nest - 170 grams (approximately 10"x4", unfolded)

  • 5.0mm Crochet Hook

  • Stitch Marker

  • Scissors

  • Darning Needle

  • Measuring Tape

Tips:  Crochet Double-Stranded, with two strands of yarn.  Doubling up on our yarn helps the nest to be sturdy and durable. [Photo 1]

Please give the diameters of the finished nests. My small one is 4 1/2” wide and looks much bigger than yours. Thank you!

Hi Annette! That is a great idea, I updated the pattern to include the dimensions :) I have made two small nests so far and one is about 4" and the other is 4 1/4", which isn't really that different from yours. I'm a very tight crocheter so it could simply be a tension issue causing the difference in our sizes. But I'm sure a baby bird or bunny will love the little bit of extra room you're giving it! <3
