A Stitched Smörgåsbord

The theme for the 2024 LA County Fair was Stars, Stripes and Fun: Celebrating LA Community and to embody that theme I created a Fourth of July Potluck showcasing some of the delicious food you can get all across our wonderfully diverse city.  It is my dream to expand this piece and represent even more cultural foods than it displays now.

Served up on the table from right to left you'll see sushi, spam musubi and shave ice, acorn flour in a basket inspired by the weaving of the Chumash Tribe served with fresh oysters, guacamole and chips in a stone molcajete with a pair of conchas, ​an In-n-Out Combo meal, a steamer basket bursting with different delights paired with a tea egg and a moon cake served up on a jade plate, moo ping presented on a bamboo leaf paired with sticky rice with a fresh slice of lime, and finally ribs served alongside collard greens and corn bread.

The table and the floor are based on Spanish trestle tables and Spanish terracotta floors.  I'm happy to say that my entry won First Place and Judge's Award of Merit in its category!
